While we may not have leaves changing in Jamaica to signify the season change, we have a slight dip in the temperature with brisk mornings, and more recently, unexpected rainy weeks. No better time to retire the summer brights and whites and embrace this beautiful season of autumn. When the colour palette gets warmer and emphasis is placed on colour, texture and prints. The season before the glitz and glam of Christmas' bejewelled gowns and sequins to dazzle the eyes. Let us embrace this season, a season fashonistas all over the world rave as their favourite to play dress up. Why? Because there is a great opportunity to showcase your knowledge on style.

COLOUR

What was coined oxblood red one year and Marsala wine another is simply just burgundy - every year this sophisticated colour is a star because it's not as sombre as black and not quite as daring as fire engine red. Some years she has more brown pigmentation than others, this year's burgundy has a deeper tone casually referred to as Tawny Port by tastemakers, thanks to Pantone.

TEXTURE

It's definitely the season for textures; some years we see when lace is front and centre. This year, however, luxe velvet takes centre stage. See velvet in stretch fabrics, crushed in bold colours on dresses, pants, bags and shoes. Velvet will continue to be a big hit, transitioning to winter or, as we know it, the holiday season. Another trend we notice is the softness of seductive satin fabrics in ladylike blouses and slip dresses. Celebrity A-listers such as Zendaya and Emma Stone can be credited with securing satin's place on the hit list. Notice the cold shoulder trend of seasons past in crisp cottons get a mature update being featured in the softest of satin fabrics.

Of course, if you live in the cool hills of Manchester you are sure to own a sweater or two for this time of year. The classic cable knit sweater in a timeless cream colour makes a comeback and can be updated with fitted jeans to prevent a chunky look.

PRINTS

Let's face it, saying dark florals are in for fall is like saying florals are in for spring, it's a no-brainer. However, the 2017 dark florals either have the aforementioned colours or they have a black/brown/navy blue background in the print. Another trend in prints this season are stripes, which, when done right, feature the autumnal hues.
