She's Got Style: Shawn and Claire : Shock And Awww

Hey Everyone! Today I'm featuring 2 lovelies in my series 'She's Got Style!', the dynamic  twin sister design duo from Michigan are so vibrant and cheerful, that I'm sure you too will be a huge fan of them, please read and enjoy!

Shock and Awww is a custom stagewear company founded by identical twin sisters, Shawn and Claire Buitendorp.  With degrees in Fashion Technology and design positions with famed designer, Betsey Johnson, under their belts, Shawn and Claire ventured head first into the world of fashion by dressing one of music's biggest stars, Katy Perry for her California Dreams Tour.  Shock and Awww has had the pleasure of dressing such esteemed individuals as, Katy Perry, British X Factor winners Little Mix, Betsey Johnson, NERVO and Teen Vogue's Andrew Bevan.  Their work has been featured in Katy Perry: Part of Me, Little Mix's most recent music video "How Ya Doin'?" featuring Missy Elliott, Teen Vogue, Nylon Magazine, Women's Wear Daily, Billboard.com, as well as on numerous blogs and fashion websites.  With the launch of their new website, www.shockandawww.com and future webstore, Shock and Awww is continuing to break into the fashion industry with their edgy and feminine designs.

How would you describe your personal style?

We originally came up with the name Shock and Awww, to reflect our differing personal styles.  Shawn's personal style is edgy, graphic and sporty- perfect for Shock, and Claire's personal style is feminine, retro and flirty- the epitome of Awww.  But, the style of Shock and Awww aims to blend these two styles, think Jeremy Scott meets Dior Haute Couture, street fashion with classic silhouettes, for no one should be locked into one specific style of dressing.

Who are your style icons.... Who do you draw your inspiration from?

Our style icons are all similar in that they dress for themselves.  They bring a sense of confidence to their looks, that makes even the craziest of ensembles irresistible!  We love seeking inspiration from Betsey Johnson, Gwen Stefani, Rita Ora, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Jessie J and the designs of Lacroix, Tod Thomas of Victoria's Secret and legendary costumer Edith Head.  We also draw a great deal of inspiration from the average tumblr girl, for the creativity they display through their outfit choices can be even more impressive than those of stylist employing stars.  In addition, we draw style inspiration from men as well, such as Pharrell Williams and Dan and Dean of Dsquared2.

When did you realize you had a passion for fashion?
We would like to say that fashion was in our blood from the beginning, but we didn't realize that fashion would be our calling until college.  We always thought we wanted to be architects or engineers!   Not until our first classes at our local community college did we realize that fashion design blended the mathematical and analytical thinking of engineering with the whimsy and freedom of expression of art.  Besides, we don't think that our nose rings and Shawn's mohawk would fit in an architectural setting lol.  We didn't realize that fashion would be our eventual career until we found great success on a whim, by dressing Katy Perry for her California Dreams Tour.  It is literally shocking how much we have accomplished in 5 years- and it's a true testament to the fact that you can achieve anything you set your mind to!

What is the one trend you wish would die/be over?
Ahhh. This is a hard one.  We feel that as fashion designers, the public should have free expression with how they dress, and so, as long as they rock the look, who are we to say that it is fashionable or not.  That being said, our biggest fashion faux pas is ill- fitting clothing.  This drives us up the wall!!!!! Seriously people, whether you are a size 2 or a size 20, squeezing into something too tight, or swimming in something too large just does not flatter your figure!

What is your favorite accessory?
Claire- Can I say that nice hair is the perfect accessory?  My confidence always shoots through the roof when I have a beautifully coiffed style!
Shawn- I've really been into menswear accessories- hats, (5 panel, fitted and snapbacks) watches and backpacks.  The more colorful and patterned the better!

What is your favourite make-up product?
We feel you can never go wrong with a bright pink lip.  Right now we are rocking Maybelline's Vivids in Fuschia Flash.  It's inexpensive, long lasting and the perfect shade of poppy pink.  Hint, hint, it also doubles as blush if you're in a pinch!  And... it's also perfectly kissable.... if only someone would ask me!

Channeling Carrie

Hi Everyone,
Here's a quick look at what I wore to my 5 year old's (Dustin's) graduation, where he graduated from kindergarten to grade 1. I'm so proud of my baby, who went to school kicking and screaming 75% of the time this year, and was still able to master the skills required to advance- Praise God!

So this dainty little tulle skirt I've had for about 2 years, got it at Forever 21 and it has gone from fitting me to not fitting me about twice. Now that I've managed to shed some weight it now fits! #win :D I still have about 6 pounds to lose to get back to my target weight, but I'm grateful for the progress.

In this outfit I'm channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw, except Carrie would have had curly long big hair, but I have 2 kids and I have no time for curly big hair.

Also, just know that no matter what kind of crummy day you're having, adding some matte red lipstick and high heels is the surest way to feel better- Ruby Woo is a red that flatters most women, a little drying, but the striking contrast will make up for it's shortcomings.

Skirt: Forever 21 old- try this // Belt & Earrings: ASOS // Shoes: Previously blogged here
 On My Lips: Ruby Woo

Be happy with what you have and are,
Be generous with both, and you won’t have to hunt for happiness.

Tah daah! Introducing my little grad Dustin! The wholly unfiltered soul who is always the first to tell me that I look pretty when I'm all dolled up.  Bless his little heart.

Don't forget to get some lipstick today and don't forget to be fabulous!

Prize Winning Green!

Hi Everyone!
This morning I went to Dylan's (my 9 year old) Prize giving and decided to do a blog post to show what I wore. I have not been shooting with the camera lately because I need a photographer and I don't have a remote, yet. My baby was awarded the prize for top boy in his class, he tied with one of his best friends, and I am even more proud of him because for all the changes that have been going on in our family life that he has still managed to maintain his high grades.  I don't normally share photos of my children here because of privacy concerns, but I'm thinking since they are my greatest achievement that I should get over this fear and do it.

"Having children is my greatest achievement.
It was my saviour.
It switched my focus from the outside to the inside.
My children are gifts, they remind me of what's important".

I shared this quote on instagram the other day, and I just wanted to share that it has been my mantra for this past week where I've been on an emotional roller coaster. I've been clinging to little Dory's famous line : just keep swimming... and I want to remind each of you to do the same :)

Successful people keep moving,
They make mistakes, but they
don’t quit."

She's Got Style!: Versicolor Closet

Hi Everyone!
Today I'm featuring another fashion blogger in my 'She's Got Style!' series, allow me to introduce you to the creative mind behind Versicolor Closet, Edwina Bazile.

Tell us a little about yourself Edwina:
I'm 26 years old, originally from Ha├»ti but currently residing in Queens, NY. Although I graduated college with a degree in Finance & Investments, I have an undying love for everything fashion. I decided to become a fashion blogger about six months ago since I figured it was something I can do on the side to not only express myself but also expand my knowledge in the fashion industry. Because I am a lover of all colorful things, I made it my mission to inspire women (and men) around the world, through blogging, to add a bit of color to their wardrobe and their lives as a whole. More about me and my style can be found on my blog site: www.versicolorcloset.com.

How do you define your personal style?
I am not sure if there is one specific style category I fit into because I love to experiment a lot when it comes to my style. One day I may wear something that makes me appear soft and feminine and the next I may come off as edgy. It's all about what's comfortable and what works for my body, my style & my budget.

Who are your style icons.... Who do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw inspiration a lot from nature and my surroundings. We don't live in a black-and-white world so because color is all around me, I'm easily captivated by anything colorful. I also love to people-watch and by doing that, I get to see other people's way of dressing and the different ways one clothing item can be worn. Celebrities that I would consider style icons include June Ambrose, Solange Knowles, Jennifer Lopez, and Rita Ora.

When did you realize you had a passion for fashion?
Wow! That's kind of a tough question. I've always loved fashion for as long as I can remember. I have pictures of when I was a two-year old, twirling in a dress and loving my white cowboy boots. So it is safe to say I was born with a love for fashion. It's evident that at some point in my life, I may not have been able to express my fashion sense the way that I would've wanted, due to being too young to dress myself or perhaps financial constraints, but the passion has always been there and it's not going anywhere.

What is the one trend you wish would die/be over?
Lol, well if I don't like a trend, I would just not wear it but it may be someone else's favorite so I wouldn't wish for it to 'die'. But to answer the question more directly, I would just say that I strongly dislike the whole boxers showing under super saggy jeans on men (and some women too) and I cannot stand to see girls out and about in Uggs and pajama bottoms.

What is your favorite accessory?
I'm a big fan of all accessories but if there's one thing I cannot leave my house without it's my earrings. But I also have a weakness for statement necklaces. My current favorite is a multicolored beaded one from Aldo which can be seen in this post on my blog.

What is your favorite make-up product?
I fell in love with Maybelline Volume Express mascara the first time I used it. It works wanders on my barely-there lashes so it tops the list of my current favorites.

What are your hopes for your blog?
I am hoping for a successful blog as are most, if not all bloggers. But for Versicolor Closet, that success will be defined by the fact that readers will continue to visit because they know they will find an inspirational quote that will motivate them, or know that they will find an outfit idea that will not cost them a fortune. I also hope that my followers and subscribers will see through my work, that if you set goals and work hard, you can achieve them; That adding a little color to your wardrobe can brighten up your day. If I inspire one person to do better in any aspect of life or dress better - which in turn increases their confidence, then I'll know Versicolor Closet doesn't only mean changeable in color but also changeable for the better.

DIY: Cap-Toe Shoes, As Seen On Smile Jamaica

Hi everyone!
Have you heard? Now trending are the classic and sophisticated cap-toe shoe which is an easy way to polish off a chic ladylike look.

The cap toe shoe has been around since 1957 when Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel created the first pair of two-tone pair. To this day it remains a staple in every fashionista's closet.

Chanel (web sourced image)
As seen on Smile Jamaica last week, I showed how to update a pair of shoes with a few simple steps. Unfortunately, I do not have the photographs of every single step, but the video from the show is at the end of this tutorial.

SUPPLIES:
Pair of shoes
Acrylic paint
Painter's tape or masking tape
Paint brush
Clear spray paint
Scrap paper

Measure and tape off about 2'' of the front of the shoe.
Ensure that you measure properly so not to make a mistake.
Press down on the tape to seal the edges carefully.

Paint the area carefully, applying the paint in strokes going away from the tape to prevent bleeding.

Allow the paint to dry for about 20 minutes, then apply a second coat of paint.

Carefully remove the tape, then clean up edges if necessary and touch up with paint.
(You can use a black sharpie marker to straighten the line is using black paint).

Cover the unpainted parts using scrap paper, then in a well ventilated room, hold the can 8-10 inches away from shoes then spray the painted area to seal the paint and protect from the elements.

Optional Steps:

  • Update ballet flats with neon paints or add 3-D effects such as rhinestones
  • Sprinkle glitter on top of painted area then seal with clear spray
  • Use a metallic spray paint in silver or gold for a metallic finish
